Setting up a grow can be a daunting task, especially when you’re just starting out. Every grower has different needs and requirements but I want to show you the equipment I think you’ll need to get off to the best start.

Marijuana grow tent

The first thing to consider when growing marijuana indoors is your grow-tent. You could always turn a garage or shed into a virtual tent, but you won’t get as much close control over your environment. When choosing your grow-tent you have to ask yourself a few questions. How much space do I have? How many plants do I want to grow? What’s my budget? These are two great options to consider:

Marijuana grow lights

The lighting landscape has changed drastically since I started out. Back then the best lights were Vertical HID’s with 4-panel parabolic reflectors, now you can choose anything from halides to high-pressure sodium, LED to Plasma. It all depends on the number of plants you want to grow, what type of plants, and, as always, your budget. It’s not just the cost of the lights you need to consider, you have to think about your utility bills, too. You can learn more about lighting in episode three: Choosing Your Lights.

Humidifier and dehumidifier

It’s really important to control the level of humidity within your grow. The best way to do this is to match nature. Keep the humidity up during the day, but down at night. This is known as vapor pressure deficit. For this you will need good, reliable appliances that are energy-star compliant, so you won’t use all your budget on power.

Soil and nutrients

Soil and nutrients are an important part of the growing process. The main choice with soil is between amended and un-amended soils. The latter gives the grower more control of the nutrient levels in the soil and works really well with feeds like Vegamatrix. Amended soils are very popular with beginners – you generally don’t add any further nutes for the first few weeks at least.

Carbon dioxide

Plants thrive with high levels of carbon dioxide, traditionally supplied from of gas tanks with controller and regulators. There are some alternatives to these nowadays, and growers can use mushroom spores to generate enough CO2 for most grow tents.

Making the right choices

Getting the right equipment is vital to a successful grow. You should never exceed your budget, especially if you’re growing for the first time, but there are some amazing, high-quality products out there that won’t break the bank. If you look after your equipment, it will be with you grow after grow after grow.

In the next video, I’ll show you how to create the perfect set-up. You’ll be one step closer to growing your own.
