White Widow is one of the most famous cannabis strains in the world. Not many cultivars can match it for resin production, resilience, looks, flavor and effect. It’s very popular with beginners and can produce amazing yields for even the greenest of growers. If there was a cannabis cultivar hall of fame, White Widow would be one of the first names on the list. It’s a beautiful, well-loved strain and a genuine 420 favorite.

But who created White Widow? Why did it become so popular? And why, with the amount of amazing new hybrids available, is it still the go-to cannabis strain for tens of thousands of growers?

White Widow: class is permanent.

It’s 1994. The Serbs are pounding Sarajevo. Orange Juice Simpson is redefining the high-speed car chase and a couple of guys are busy creating the soon-to-be-most-famous-cannabis-strain-of-all-time, White Widow. The two guys in question are Master breeder Shantibaba and Arjan Roskam. They formed the Greenhouse Seed Company in the same year.

White Widow has a Brazilian, pure sativa mother and a Keralan (indica hybrid) father. It’s widely accepted that the mother was Manga Rosa, a very old-school Brazilian landrace, and that Shantibaba discovered the Keralan father while touring India. Keralan strains are noted for their power and resin production, traits passed down (and then some) to the indica-dominant White Widow offspring.

Of course, there are conflicting accounts as to the origin of the White Widow cultivar, but it’s Shantibaba alone who is able to reproduce the original hybrid. These days, every breeder under the sun has an ‘original’ White Widow. Word around the campfire has it that back in ’96, Nirvana and Dutch Passion both obtained a pack of White Widow cannabis seeds from Shantibaba, releasing their own versions within a year. These were no doubt good quality cultivars, but were they original White Widows? The jury is out.

New breeders pop up all of the time, each with their own White Widow. More stories emerge more claims, more mysteries. They serve only to enhance the romance around what is a truly great strain. Let’s take a look at her numbers.

White Widow: the facts

  • Type: Indica dominant
  • THC: 25%
  • Recreational: Creative and euphoric
  • Medical: Spasma and Stress
  • Flowering Time: 8 – 10 weeks
  • Harvest Month: September
  • Yield: 450 – 500 g/plant

Does White Widow get you high?

White Widow Feminized delivers an explosion of euphoric energy that erupts in creative conversation, diversity of thought and profound happiness. Like many well-balanced, stable hybrids, it has physical as well as cerebral effects. The sparkling, firecracker high mellows into a deeply relaxing warmth, the soft glowing embers of a fire that gently fade as you embrace sleep.

It’s not so old as to be really called an old-school cannabis strain, the high-THC content is testament to that, but it does have a nostalgic quality to the high. It has that same spaced-out chattiness, that element of wonder, that happy, shared wavelength that all 420 fans will recognize.

Is White Widow a medicinal cannabis strain?

The medicinal benefits of White Widow are more physical than psychological, but she is a fantastic stress-buster. The euphoric high can be a good way to alleviate anxiety and depression, even just for the short term, and the sleepy, relaxing qualities can also provide some respite from insomnia.

Where White Widow really shines as a high-THC medical marijuana strain is as an analgesic. Heavy-hitting, indica-dominant strains are well-renowned for their pain-relieving qualities, and White Widow is no different. Medical marijuana patients have used her to relieve symptoms of arthritis and fibromyalgia, and her anti-inflammatory properties can sooth muscle spasms and cramps.

Some patients turn to medical-grade cannabis simply to reinvigorate their appetite, after chemotherapy, for example. The ‘munchies’ is far more than an innocent quirk of being high, it’s actually a great way to for people to reconnect with food, especially after a long illness.

What does White Widow smell like?

A fully flowered White Widow is an amazing blend of shaved wood, sharp spices and delicate herbs. The primary terpenes are myrcene, caryophyllene and limonene, and this is nowhere more evident than in the aroma. Where other cannabis strains have sugary notes, White Widow is more savory. That’s not to say it completely lacks zing. The aroma is reminiscent of a simmering mushroom stroganoff… earthy and deep, the sweetness arriving via soft onions and sour cream.

What does White Widow taste like?

Once combusted, the aroma takes on hints of sandalwood and some surprisingly sharp hints of citrus. One really special thing about these flavors is that they linger, really linger! I can still taste the first White Widow joint I smoked 17 years ago (in a little town called Amersfoort, Holland, just me and the Fijian rugby team). You will taste it with every meal for weeks – and that ain’t a bad thing! White Widow tastes great, dank and unique, appealing enough to please even the pickiest of pot fans.

Is White Widow easy to grow?

Okay, I know what you’re thinking, such a plant must be tricky to cultivate. Nope! She’s easy to grow, especially indoors using super-cropping techniques or a Screen of Green (SCROG). She delivers good yields without too much stretch. A little pruning below the screen, plenty of nitrogen in veg and extra phosphorous in flower and you should see very good results. Outdoor grows might be tricker, she can be a fussy eater and sensitive to climate. But with skill and a little luck, the outdoor yield will be bigger, the nugs will be denser and the flavors far richer

So, what makes it so great? Is it the short flowering time? The resistance to disease? Maybe. Maybe it’s the high THC sparkle. White Widows glimmer with billions of twinkling trichomes, tiny mirrors that reflect all that’s magical about cannabis. It could be the high. As we have already discussed, the high from White Widow is AMAZING! If you’re looking for the perfect novice plant, you’ve found it, but you should check out her cousins, too. The White Widow family

The sheer volume of White Widow variants is astounding. Surely the sign of a great cannabis strain! We have so many White Widow variants at the Homegrown Cannabis Co. that there is something for everyone. Keep an eye out for our autoflowering CBD version, you won’t find that in too many seedbanks!!!

Feminized White Widow Auto

  • Genotype: 40% Sativa, 40% Indica; 20% Ruderalis
  • THC: 25%
  • Growth Cycle: 10-12 weeks from seeds to harvest
  • Yield: 400-450 gr/sqm; 150-200 gr/plant

Photoperiod White Widow takes several months in flower, especially when planted outdoors. These autos, on the other hand, grow at an accelerated rate. After only 2 to 3 weeks in veg, these plants automatically flip into flowering period, with the entire cycle complete in just 10 to 12 weeks.

Indoors, this compact plant can deliver fairly generous yields, about 15 ounces per 3 sq/ft – pretty good for a plant that will never exceed 3 foot tall.

Outdoors, White Widow Autoflower can reach 3 and a half feet, but prefers sunnier, Mediterranean style climates. Yield outdoors can reach 7 ounces per plant, but you can have up to four harvests per year with autos, so it’s unlikely you’ll suffer a drought!

White Widow Regular

  • Genotype: 25% Sativa, 75% Indica
  • THC: 22%
  • Flowering Time: 8 weeks; Late September
  • Yield: 450-500 gr/sqm; 600-900 gr/plant

Regular seeds have a 50/50 chance of producing a male or female cannabis plant, which means many growers buy twice as many with the aim of discarding unwanted males. Obviously, if you buy feminized cannabis seeds you won’t have this issue.

Regular cannabis seeds, however, are essential to any breeding program and you won’t find a strain more suitable than our regular White Widow. It’s robust, super-stable and has a brilliant genetic profile.

Blueberry x White Widow Feminized

  • Yield: 500 gr/sqm; 500-1000 gr/plant

The most fragrant cannabis strain of all time meets the world’s easiest-to-grow hybrid. Blueberry x White Widow showcases the best of two legendary strains. The THC level might not be insanely high, but the rich terpene profile significantly enhances the effects.

Blueberry x White Widow feminized seeds are pretty easy to grow. They don’t require special techniques but will benefit from regular trimming, pruning and LST. • THC: 15-20%
  • Flowering Time: 6-7 weeks; Late October
  • Yield: 350-500 gr/sqm; 450-500 gr/plant

White Widow and AK-47 are like two sides of the same coin. Both produce creative and clear-headed effects – but with a touch of sedation. While White Widow is all about euphoria and energy, AK-47 is more mellow and peaceful.

White Widow x AK-47 fast version seed is similar to the standard fem, though it has a slight graft of ruderalis genes. This means it remains a photoperiod cannabis plant but with one fundamental difference – its flowering time is only 6 to 7 weeks.

White Widow x California Snow Autoflower

  • Genotype: Sativa-dominant
  • THC: 15-18%
  • Growth Cycle: 8-10 weeks from seeds to harvest
  • Yield: 300 gr/sqm; 50-100 gr/plant

White Widow is a potent strain. Once the initial energetic buzz wears off you’re in for a lovely, relaxing bout of couchlock. Some would prefer to experience the euphoric high without the final sedation, however, which is why we threw a bit of California Snow into the mix.

By also infusing Ruderalis, White Widow x California Snow Auto has grown to become a hugely popular hybrid. It’s short, versatile and produces large colas speckled with snowy trichomes. It takes only 8 to 10 weeks from pop to crop, and can produce up to A typical indoor yield is 10 ounces per 3 sq/ft. • THC: 16-20%
  • Growth Cycle: 10-11 weeks from seeds to harvest
  • Yield: 500-600 gr/sqm; 50-100 gr/plant

This phenomenal cross between White Widow and Crystal Meth delivers a rollercoaster ride of a high. An exhilarating euphoric buzz followed by a relaxing, massaging high.

White Widow x Crystal Meth Auto is a joy to grow. Hardy and low-maintenance, it thrives both indoors and out. After 10 to 11 weeks from germination, it’s ready for harvest. You’re looking at about 14 ounces per 3 sq/ft indoors, and 3 ounces per plant outdoors.
