Space cake, brownie and muffin might sound like the greatest law firm ever, but they’re actually names for delicious, easy-to-make cannabis edibles. Space Cake is the umbrella term for any baked biscuit, muffin, pastry, brownie or cake: all popular, enjoyable ways to enjoy your fresh, homegrown marijuana.
People have been enjoying cannabis edibles since at least 1000 BC. Back then, you might imagine edibles were used exclusively for religious or medical purposes, though the opposite is more likely to be true. Ancient governments and societies probably had bigger things to worry about than what people did in the privacy of their own huts. Once food and shelter were sorted, why not get baked and lie under the stars, wondering where it all came from and why you were there? Swapping theories and breathing in the true wonder of the universe. It was a happy, magical time to be alive… though their broadband speeds were nothing to write home about.
What are space cakes?
Cannabis edibles come in all shapes and sizes, from butter to pasta, jellies to drinks. The space cake is one of the more traditional ways of enjoying an edible, and one of the easiest to make, too. They’re so-called because something about the process or the slow digestion can deliver a really trippy high. You can expand the mind and sit under your own ancient stars, letting your imagination run riot. Space cakes are available in lots of Californian dispensaries and any trip to Amsterdam would be wasted without a coffeeshop brownie (or two). If Amsterdam is a canal bridge too far, however, don’t worry… you can learn how to make space cakes right here with us.
Not everyone likes joints and spliffs and there has been little research into the long-term effects of vaping. So for those who prefer a sensual experience over a pill or sublingual tincture, (without smoking a fat one), marijuana edibles are absolutely perfect.
They’re tasty, enjoyable and a genuine pleasure to make. Not only that, when you compare space cakes or hash cakes to traditional ways of getting high, especially in terms of potency, you might be surprised at the results.
Does space cake get you high?
YES!!! And then some! They’re far more than a treat for a sweet tooth. They almost unwaveringly deliver a psychedelic high of cosmic proportions, whether you bake with a sativa, indica or well-balanced hybrid.
Consuming edibles delivers THC more slowly to the bloodstream as it has to go via the gut and liver. Once it hits you though, you stay hit. The average high from an edible is four to eight hours and you don’t even need one of the more highly potent strains.
When you eat marijuana you’re getting one of the best BOGO deals in history. The THC passes through the liver before hitting the bloodstream, getting broken down into Delta-9 THC and 11-OH THC, the latter being a very potent chemical indeed. Two forms of THC for the price of one.
How to make the best space cakes
If you like your edible weed baked, the first thing you’ll have to make is the butter. It’s the basis for all good recipes and if you get this bit right, you’ll be one step closer to making the best space cakes in town.
Whether you’re making space cookies, muffins, cupcakes or brownies, the main ingredient is hashish butter. Also known as cannabutter, it is, quite simply, butter with cannabis. Hashish oil is a viable alternative, but it lacks the flavor and potency of a good, creamy hash butter.
Before you get started, clean your weed! Make sure it’s free of molds and pesticides and anything else you don’t want to eat. Soaking it in water helps get rid of chlorophyll and makes for a much tastier final product.
Hashish Butter Recipe (makes approximately 1/2 cup):
- 1/2 cup salted butter
- 1/4 ounce finely ground cannabis buds
- Melt butter in a saucepan using low heat.
- Add ground cannabis and let it simmer for 45 minutes. Stir frequently.
- In a dish with a tight-fitting lid, strain the butter using the back of a spoon to extract all the goodness.
You can store the cooled butter in a fridge but it’s best to use it as soon as possible. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might want to spice it up with some of the following:
- red pepper flakes
Hashish oil can also be made by following the same steps above substituting coconut oil for the butter.

How long do the effects of a space cake last?
As mentioned above, space cakes deliver a high that lasts much longer than simply tooting a quick doob. You’re looking at around four hours with a smaller dose from low-THC cannabis edibles, but about eight hours from larger doses of high-THC edibles.
It’s also wise to avoid smoking or vaping cannabis while you’re consuming edibles. You could easily lose track of how much you’ve taken and the high tends to be smoother when isolated from other sources. Stick to the edibles but remember, moderation is key, no matter how tasty your muffins might be!
Are space cakes safe?
There is always a chance you might eat too many edibles. They take a while to kick in and by the time they do, you might have indulged in a few more than needed. If you do eat too many the best thing to do is sleep it off or just take a lie down. While overdosing is not really part of cannabis vocabulary, taking more than you should can be unnerving, especially for newbies.
One thing that fans of cannabis edibles should be aware of is safety at home. Cakes and brownies are very attractive to both children and pets, so keep them away from little hands and hungry snouts.
