Thailand is the birthplace of some of the world's oldest Sativa landraces. One particular phenotype really stands out from the crowd with its vibrant purple hues and intense euphoric high. Dubbed Purple Thai, this mostly-Sativa strain is a descendant of Chocolate Thai and Highland Oaxacan Gold.
Chocolate Thai should be a familiar name to old-school cannabis enthusiasts. It rose to prominence in the United States in the 1960s, when marines passing through Thailand from Vietnam brought the infamous 'Thai sticks' back with them. The common belief is that one of this strain's phenotypes served as the genetic base of Purple Thai.
Highland Oaxacan Gold, on the other hand, shares remarkable similarities with Colombian Gold, except that it does not have the same coloration. Instead, its brownish-green buds come with purple and red tips. Besides bolstering the beautiful colors of Chocolate Thai, it also brings more substantial trichome production.
Put them together and you get Purple Thai. Cultivating this plant needs a degree of experience and skill level, as well as plenty of vertical space indoors. It can grow from 5 – 8.5 feet indoors, or an enormous 13.5 feet outside.
Growing Purple Thai from Feminized Seeds
With parent strains hailing from Thailand and Mexico, Purple Thai is best suited to a tropical climate, thriving exceptionally well in locations with plenty of sunshine and moisture. When grown indoors, it has the potential for vigorous growth provided there's a combination of ample vertical space and powerful HID lamps.
In a traditional set-up, the height of this plant presents one significant problem. The intensity of light diminishes significantly the farther away the bud sites are from the lighting fixture, resulting in poorly developed buds in the lower areas. Installing side-mounted lamps address this issue, although it may give rise to another problem – excessive heat.
A better solution is to employ the Screen of Green training technique. This method entails crafting a mesh screen on the upper canopy and then manipulating the branches to form evenly- spread bud sites. It's an economical set-up in that it does not require additional lamps other than the primary HID light. More importantly, it can result in a yield of 2.13 ounces per square foot. Such a generous harvest more than makes up for the long flowering time, which takes 11 to 13 weeks.
Outdoors, each plant can produce up to 35 ounces in ideal conditions. Usually, the harvest period falls between the last week of October and first week of November.
Fragrance and Flavor
Purple Thai has an unassuming but pleasant fragrance, with an earthy odor accentuated by chocolate notes and with a sweet, nutty, coffee undertone.
Effects
Purple Thai is, without a doubt, a potent strain capable of inducing a highly energetic, euphoric cerebral high. A correctly grown plant can boast at least 20% THC, making it an insanely powerful specimen that's best avoided by newbies.
Moments after taking a hit or two, the energizing effects swarm into the mind and the body. In an instant, the mood shifts to positivity and happiness, which is one of the reasons it's known as a great wake-and-bake strain. Not only does it provide a boost of vigor for physical activities, it also promotes mental clarity and focus. It can even unlock the creative side, making innovative thoughts and ideas flow freely.
The seemingly limitless energy boost goes on for hours. In a casual setting or small social gathering, Purple Thai makes for an excellent conversation starter. Its moon-enhancing and euphoric effects will make you feel upbeat, gregarious and much more talkative.
Depending on the dosage, the high can be intense and profound. In some cases, the altered state of mind may come with visual and auditory distortions, and it's possible that instead of a focused high, the intense stimulation may shift to introspection.
Medical
An immediate benefit of Purple Thai's energizing high is that it may counteract the effects of fatigue while potentially calming the nerves and melting away stress. Purple Thai is said to have a number of medicinal applications that may ward off depressive symptoms, while easing the debilitating effects of anxiety. It's also said to be highly effective in managing pain caused by the likes of arthritis, fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis.
It's common to feel much hungrier after sampling this strain. Cancer patients may benefit from this, since loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting are side effects of chemotherapy. Purple Thai may even help calm a queasy stomach.
Despite its therapeutic potential, there may be some unwanted reactions. Cottonmouth, dry eyes and dizziness are among the most common. In excessive doses, the high THC levels may be too overbearing, causing anxiety or paranoia.
Purple Thai Feminized Seeds
Purple Thai is a descendant of the original Chocolate Thai, with some Highland Oaxacan Gold genes added to the mix. A highly stimulating strain, it can quickly turn frowns upside down and usher in a joyous state. It may even serve the medical cannabis community, by reducing pain and easing worries and feelings of dread.
When grown indoors, it needs plenty of vertical space. Fortunate growers who do have room for the plant inside the house will also have to endure 11 – 13 weeks of flowering, but it's well worth it with yields of up to 2.13 ounces per square foot. Outdoors, it performs even better, with each plant providing up to 35 ounces of buds. Getting started is as simple as obtaining these feminized seeds from Homegrown Cannabis Co., so what are you waiting for?
